Richard Freeman is a Co-Founder & Co-CEO at Moja based in Tucson, Arizona, United States, North America. I’m a serial entrepreneur and builder at heart, with a 30+ year track record of founding, scaling, and advising ventures across sectors—from adventure travel to telecom to digital infrastructure in emerging markets. My journey began as a scuba instructor and dive shop owner, which evolved into founding an adventure travel company. I led dive expeditions across the globe and eventually sold the business after establishing it as a niche leader in experiential travel. In the mid-1990s, I transitioned into technology and telecom, co-founding a company that went public on Nasdaq via a reverse merger. We acquired a Canadian software firm, which led to the founding of CallKey, an MVNO that pioneered call-processing technology to dramatically reduce global roaming costs. I also served as CEO of a spin-off acquired from Sprint Wireless, expanding my leadership in wireless telecom. Building on CallKey’s success, I co-founded BlueSky Telecom, an MVNO I still co-own. Through BlueSky, we built a global portfolio of enterprise clients. That work evolved into a consulting practice where I advised several Fortune 500 companies on optimizing telecom and IT operations—unlocking hundreds of millions in savings and delivering measurable impact. Today, I serve as Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Moja, a mission-driven platform tackling some of Africa’s most pressing challenges: food insecurity, youth unemployment, and access to practical education. While rooted in agriculture, Moja serves the broader MSME sector—offering tools that support learning, trading, and business growth. The platform integrates education, marketplace access, and a dynamic networking tool—connecting users to peers, mentors, and opportunities. Financial inclusion is also part of the offering, enabling users to participate more fully in the digital economy. We partner with universities, government agencies, and development organizations to ensure our services are localized, scalable, and aligned with national priorities. We’re currently closing a new funding round to accelerate expansion in South Africa and Malawi. I’ve developed a deep appreciation for hands-on operations and the practical realities of building from the ground up. Success comes not just from vision or capital, but from assembling the right team—talented individuals who share the mission. That’s been a cornerstone of every venture I’ve helped lead.
