Gerry Normand is a Founder & Director - Asociacion PILAS Student Ministry at Commission to Every Nation based in Guatemala, North America. We like to describe ourselves as ordinary people partnering with God to accomplish the extraordinary. We, Gerry & Barb Normand, were Canadian business professionals for many years mainly in operations, logistics, sales and marketing, and leadership development. Over the course of our travels and experiences we have witnessed slums, poverty, sickness, social injustice, and many other realities of the world we live in. We decided several years ago to dedicate the rest of our lives exploring ways we can help make a practical, emotional and spiritual difference in the lives of people whom God loves. Impacting Sumpango Sacatepéquez Guatemala Since 2013 Education Scholarships - Guatemalans are desperate for real hope and real change. Poverty/income inequality and social exclusion are some of the main challenges that are prevalent in Guatemala. The denial of the rural poor from opportunities of personal growth and development reflects their disadvantaged economic circumstances. PILAS fights to level the playing field, seek fairness, and defend the oppressed by providing Christ-centered education and leadership development programs to impoverished indigenous people. Our goal is to build up a generation of community leaders and world shakers! Leadership Development - PILAS gives priority to the development of Godly character. We challenge and mentor students, as well as youth group participants, to reach their full potential in order to use their God-given abilities to positively impact their homes, churches and communities for Christ. Designed to identify young burgeoning leaders from disadvantaged indigenous villages, the goal is to inspire and empower them through servant leadership, Christian teachings and formal education, equipping them to be tomorrow’s community leaders. PILAS Learning & Fun Club - A holistic approach to education, addressing students’ academic, social and emotional needs. Professional teachers help nearly 200 students understand their homework and provide additional academic content, while offering a fun, social and secure environment for them to feel supported and loved, and learn about Jesus. Discipleship - Youngsters need models and mentors. They also need community. CLUB CONEXIÓN is a weekly youth group in the different villages of Sumpango. We collaborate with the local schools, using their classrooms to host CLUB. CLUB provides a safe, loving, and wholesome atmosphere for kids where they can enjoy activities that are fun and interactive, helping them discover who Jesus Christ is, follow Him, and live a life that honors Him.
